Cut

Diamonds are cut into a number of shapes. The most popular shapes are round, marquise, oval, pear, heart and emerald. The choice is largely a personal preference. A well-cut diamond with the right proportions, display brilliance and fire.

Carat

The weight of diamonds is measured in carats. One carat is divided into 100 "points". One carat equals 0.2 gram. Size is the most obvious factor in determining the value of a diamond, but two diamonds of equal size can have very unequal values, depending on their quality.

Clarity

To determine a diamond's clarity, it is viewed under 10-power magnification (10X lens) by a trained eye. Diamond, being a natural stone, often contains small mineral inclusions. The fewer and smaller the inclusions, the better is the passage of light through it.

Colour

Diamonds are found in a range of colors. Colorless diamonds are most precious as they allow white light to pass throught easily to be dispersed in rainbow of colors.

When buying a diamond, it helps to know the 4C's
  1. If cut too shallow, light escapes through the pavilion before it can be reflected.
  2. If it is cut too deep, some light escapes through the opposite side of the pavilion.

Tips on caring your diamond

A little care and attention is needed for your diamond jewellery. Preferable store your diamond in its own box, diamond pieces can scratch each other and other jewellery. Occasion cleaning, removes the dirt accumulated from daily wear, helps to bring out the brilliance of the diamond. To clean your diamond jewllery, simply immerse in warm soapy water. Gently brush with a soft brush. Rinse well under warm running water, then pat dry with a soft cloth.
